WU Art & Community Project
Purpose:
WU Art & Community Project is seeking opportunities for student and faculty artwork to be displayed throughout WU campus, at different locations, such as: the Law School, the new Siegel and Danforth Halls, etc. Many WU administrators and Chairs have expressed interest in promoting and displaying university artwork for varying periods of time.
-All art students, alumni, and faculty (painters, sculptors, designers, print makers, photographers) are invited to upload images of their available work at http://artintheworld.ning.com/photo. Digital images of proposed art works may be uploaded and edited in the PHOTOS folder, and, after being approved, will go in the WU Portfolio Selection ALBUMS, for easy access by curators and requesting departments. All submitting students should consider presenting works ready for installation (framed, wired, etc)
Why loan our works, you may ask…
Benefits:
I believe all parties involved will benefit from this effort:
-students and faculty promote the arts and present their work while giving back to the community;
-campus buildings benefit from a free service while decorating their common spaces;
-art is reaching for the audience rather then a selected audience reaching for the art;
-and yes, if we are lucky, we may even sell some of our work;
-the project promotes the Art Department and WU as a whole, and underlines its cultural significance.
-our effort and dedication will make Washington University even a better place for all
Details:
-WU interdepartmental umbrella insurance coverage will insure the artwork at its fair market value.
Pieces are loaned free of charge for the first 3 months; at the end of that period, the borrower may purchase the pieces for the insured/contracted $ value, or rent them for 5% per month, check written directly to the artist each month.
-Eventual proceeds from the sales will be dispersed as such: 70% goes to the student / artist, 15% to the operating cost fund, and 15% will contribute to a future scholarship fund for the Art Department. The artist is responsible for distributing the 30% commission to Becky Dale (the Art Department) or Nicole Petrescu (the custodian).
- Deans Binnington, Leax, and Colangelo, as well as the WU Legal Counsel and the Painting Department all approved and encouraged the creation and the development of the project.
-Nicole Petrescu, graduate student, will curate the new submissions every week.
